A series of pictures shows a journey from Camden Town to Central London from the viewpoint of PEOPLE and their everyday life. The project was made by @zmkvanna. Enjoy!
This early morning
Camden Town slowly awakes. Even though winter awaits around the corner, rays of
the sun feel softly warm on the face. People who walk down the pavement of this
wide street are ready to begin the day with fresh energy that beams from their
eyes. They do not all seem to be going to work, some of them just wander around
without a purpose. A special feature of this place, that distinguishes it from
central London is easy to notice and creates a very peaceful atmosphere. Not
everyone has a purpose, not everyone is going to work, not everyone is a
tourist, there is no uncoordinated crowd that would take away the beauty of
this place. It does not always do it, of course, it adds character to such
places as centers, but in here it is not needed indeed. It appears that
residents go out of their homes to buy all the needed supplies, but truth to be
told, they are just looking for an excuse to shop for the most ridiculous
matters they can find. In this place it is not hard to forget about all duties
and get lost in the shopping craziness in the labyrinth of million petite
stores with Chinese salesmen so keenly inviting inside with their smiles or
cheap prices.
Around 10 AM, while moving on to a
smaller street behind the Camden Market, it’s pleasant to hear the loud voices
fading away slowly, until it is completely silent. All tiny streets have a
disease of a smell that strongly suggests the presence of a restaurant nearby.
It always happens to those little alleys. It is strange how the inside of the
restaurant and its design affects peoples table manners. While dining in
expensive venues guests keep up appearances very well, fancy attire and
hundreds of knives and forks suit them well, they feel natural with it, but
eating cheap kebab served on a paper plate in a kitschy surrounding of colorful
lava lamps contrasting with vintage brick walls they suddenly stop caring about
those table manners. A few steps further away the smell is gone and the fresh
air fills out the lungs.
Midday appears to be
a time when workers come out of their caves for a little cigarette breaks that
are needed after being busy doing their jobs for at least 3 hours. The city
undergoes small changes everyday, but people ignore to the point where they
suddenly see the world different than it was, years and years later and start
to wonder when it all happened. They are simply insensitive and numb in the
everyday life they have, trying to wait for happiness, even look for it in
different places, when everything they need is right under their noses.
Appreciation in time is a virtue.
All the signs suggest
its almost lunchtime, the early afternoon. A few raindrops appeared in the
meantime. It doesn’t look this cheerful and happy any more. Chilly breeze
brushes the skin every few seconds, but it is not continuous. After a few hours
of being here its for some reason easy to see all the imperfections. You always
see them after a bit of the time passes, after the charm of the first
impression is gone. They do not become visible because of looking at a certain
thing longer, but because of the relationship that is commenced between the
two. When people get to know something, the way it works or how it looks like,
they instantly start to see different way it could be improved. They feel the
permission to force changes, because they own something or have a significant
relationship with it. That's how all marriages are broken.
The afternoon brings to mind a lazy
atmosphere and lack of movement. But here it is different. People still run,
running errands. Although in street art
it present on every step of the way, people do not seem to appreciate it
enough. Some of them consider it as a devastation of public goods, art as
vandalism, but still art! No matter how many opinions there it, everyone has to
agree on one thing - they make the city colorful, therefore beautiful. Art,
even when people do not know it, affects the sole in a significant way, so
seeing it everyday makes people more happy and relax.
The businesses of the
city are starting to close. Everything starts to seem more calm and quiet.
Salesman clean the windows of the stores, put everything in place after the
long day of satisfying various cravings of their customers. They do not longer
care if people look at the goods behind the glass separating the store from the
street.
As the day passes, travelling through London seems like a good idea.
There is so many people on the tube, is seems like they are invisible. They
just all blend into the surrounding. Apparently there is a rule, that all
foreigners know, you’re not supposed to look at people at the tube, because
it’s impolite. That is definitely not the way we do it in Poland. There is
something interesting about people on the tube, or any other mean of transport,
because you know that every one of them has a different story, a different
life, goals, dreams. Trying not to look at them only makes you want to look at
them more.
Somehow, the sun is still shining in
Richmond, the place where all the richest Londoners live. In here, compared to
Camden Town, there is nature everywhere. The air is refreshing and feels almost
healthy to breathe in. It is a place that feels safe to be in during every time
of the day. Animals here are an integrated part of the city, therefore people
cooperate with them, treat them as part of their lives. Nature is an important
aspect of peoples lives.
The river looks very peaceful this
time of the day, the light beautifully exposes the colors of the boats. Water
symbolizes purity and fertility.
Midnight strikes the clock, the most beautiful time of the night has
begun. We’re back in central London, the place where we live our lives fast,
adventure appears around every corner and where love can be found. The place
where the journey ends, but everything else begins.
THE END
